Upper mustang trek, a popular and restricted area trekking trail of mustang trekking region, which opened for foreigners in 1992. Upper mustang trek known as one of the famous trekking destination in Nepal Himalaya that situated on the border of Nepal and Tibet. There is also strict control in obtaining a special permit from the department of immigration to protect their tradition from outside influence as well as to protect their environment.

Upper mustang is a land where the soul of man is still considered to be as real as the feet he walks on, while the land itself is almost treeless, barren landscape with a countryside similar to Tibetan plateau, but where beauty and happiness flourishes, in spite of hardship. This was part of the Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830’s. The fabled medieval wall city of Lo Monthang, informal capital of Mustang still remains a kingdom within a kingdom its full of culture and religious heritage. The early history to Lo Monthang is embellished in fable and legend rather than the recorded fact. Upper mustang has maintained its status as a separate principality until 1951. The king of Lo Monthang retains his title and he has been given the honorary rank of Colonel in the Nepalese army. Upper Mustang consists of two distinct regions: the south region cover with five villages inhabited by people related to the Manang and the northern region (the ancient kingdom of Lo Monthang), where the language, culture and traditions of this area people are almost purely same as Tibet.

A short 20 min. mountain flight from Pokhara, we arrive in Jomsom (at the part of Annapurna region) then start our trek along the Kali Gandaki gorge (the dippiest gorge in the world). We head for medieval village of Kagbeni, the trail north of Kagbeni leads to the upper Mustang trek. As we explain on our itinerary, for the next 9-12 days, we walk through the ancient village of Samar, Charang and Geling before we reach the capital Lo-Manthang at 3750m. Beside Lo-Manthang, there are place of great interest including the Namgyal Gompa (which also serves as a local court) and the village of Tingkar, Garfuk and Nifuk. You still find people swelling in the caves in theses village and some caves have amazing stupas and Buddhist Murals. On the longer version of the Mustang treks, we farther explore the region and emerge to popular Muktinath temple. As long we visit holy temple of Muktinath, we return by flight from Jomsom to Pokhara.
